WorldSkills Conference Talk #3 - Ensuring that skills reflect societies: Diversity and Inclusion in competitions and beyond

What role does gender, ethnicity, sexual identity, special education needs, or disadvantaged background play in the choices young people make when deciding their profession and education pathway?

How do these factors impact their employability and likelihood to enter into a skills competition?

During the third WorldSkills Conference Talk Wednesday, 8 July 2020 (12pm GMT), we will discuss equality, diversity and inclusion in skills. Join us to learn strategies to reduce stereotypes and create a wider range of role models to increase participation in skills.

The starting point of the discussion is the ground-breaking study about diversity and inclusion in technical careers and apprenticeships commissioned and published by WorldSkills UK. The report proves that a diverse and inclusive work and learning environment not only supports the empowerment of young people, but also has economic impact by helping more people better prepare for work. The study shows that with more diversity employers will have more choices when recruiting, leading to a more diverse and productive workplace, and ultimately more innovation.

We will discuss with Euphrasia Mulenga (Aircraft Engineer from Zambia and WorldSkills Champions Trust representative for Africa), Denise Amyot (President and CEO Colleges and Institutes Canada, Sharon Blyfield (HR Coca-Cola European Partners, UK), and Dr. Neil Bentley-Gockman (CEO WorldSkills UK).
