With view that the best is yet to come, WorldSkills Barbados successfully held its 2021 Junior Future Skills Camp.

The five-day event was offered online, focusing on key future skills that included 3D Digital Game Art, Aerial Robotics (Drone Operating), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Mobile Applications Development, and the Internet of Things.

International Experts were brought in for training, helping around 100 students, aged between 14 and 18.

Among the skills mastered at the event were Autodesk Revit software to create a 3D model of town houses from a 2D architectural drawing and using Android Studio software for an educational math game for young children in Mobile Applications Development.

The five top performers in each skill received gold medals, a skills passport, and other prizes.

The camp also featured in a presentation on the Year of Innovation at the 2021 WorldSkills Conference by Dario Walcott, Lead Officer of the WorldSkills Barbados Programme and a Technical Officer with TVET Council.

As one student, Adriadne John, put it “It actually helped me a lot with texturing and I learned more things than when I first started. It will also help me with some future projects.”

Mr Walcott, commenting on the camp’s achievements, said, “Our young people are hungry for new knowledge and skills.”

“With the recent reduced movement due to COVID and increased online presence, we find that more people have become interested in digital skills.”
