Skills Canada takes it skills experience online

The last weekend in May should have seen thousands of visitors watch students demonstrate their skills in Vancouver for the Skills/Compétences Canada National Competition. Unfortunately Covid-19 had other plans.

With no option but to cancel, the WorldSkills Member for Canada was left not just with a large hole in its calendar, but a lost opportunity to share the power of skills and a vocational career with an estimated 7,500 young visitors who were due to attend the 26th national competition.

Instead the four days of competition have been transformed into a virtual week-long celebration of skills featuring many of those who would have taken part in Vancouver.

What is billed as a “digital experience of skills” uses the power of social media and the hashtag #celebrateskills to bring something of the atmosphere and excitement of the ational competition to a wider audience.

The programme, with a start date of 22 May, includes online demonstrations of everything from baking to laser cutting, talks and forums, a virtual winners circle, and contributions from Canadian Chamion Alumni and the WorldSkills Champions Trust.
