A New Look at Skills
Innovative collaboration between WorldSkills Foundation and Autodesk set for exclusive launch at the Skills Show 2014 (UK)
“A New Look at Skills” is a project that presents a range of 3D demonstrations that explain WorldSkills UK competition test project constructions, skills competencies being assessed, and the scope of professional work and career in these disciplines.
The skill areas that have been chosen for this 2014 pilot project between WorldSkills and Autodesk are Bricklaying, Cabinetmaking, Carpentry, Mechanical Engineering Design – CAD, CNC Machining and Stonemasonry: all of which have been identified by The Skills Show as areas which are traditionally difficult to convey and communicate to the visiting public.
This annual three-day show is the largest skills and careers event in the United Kingdom (UK), attracting an average 75,000 visitors and providing hands-on experiences that inspire young people to explore further education, skills and Apprenticeships.
The 3D demonstrations are comprised of 3D digital animations and 3D printed models designed and developed in collaboration with a team of Autodesk Student Experts whom have participated in the UK national competition platform. Some have even gone on to represent the UK in Mechanical Engineering Design – CAD at WorldSkills Competition level. Following this pilot launch of A New Look At Skills at The Skills Show 2014, all demonstration animated videos and CAD datasets will be made freely available to Member countries and regions across the WorldSkills network.
The Autodesk Student Experts who have created the 3D demonstrations will be on-site in a central New Look At Skills showcase area to demonstrate how they have used Autodesk software to create the projects in 3D, and will be demonstrating how they can then be brought to life with 3D printing.
