Hong Kong skilled talent’s agile response to a global pandemic

Smart delivery robots and unmanned logistics vehicles are helping to meet the surge in the demand for takeaway and food delivery services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A graduate of the Information Technology (IT) Discipline at the Hong Kong Institute of Vocational Education (IVE), Steven YEUNG, has established an IT start-up providing services on cloud computing, green technology and mobile applications.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, he co-developed smart delivery robots and unmanned logistics vehicles with a robotics company.

Empowered by new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet-of-things (IoT) and Cloud Computing, the robots are able to offer food delivery and other courier services along designated routes by simply entering data like maps and destination information into the robots. The robots can also ride the elevator, control moving speed and avoid pedestrians or obstacles autonomously. The robots are now going on trial at the restaurants of Science Park, Hong Kong.

Another project developed by Steven YEUNG’s start-up is a surgical mask production environment monitoring system. The system leverages cloud and IoT technologies to offer 24-hour automated monitoring for mask production in a dust-free environment. In light of the high demand for surgical masks worldwide, the system makes great contribution to sustain the mass production of masks.
